Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church

"The Church where God gets the Glory and the People are His story"

  Our Mission Statement

140-Year History of Our Church

In the grove of many Sweet Gum trees located in Caswell County, North Carolina on November 30, 1875, a group of dedicated Christians assembled to begin plans for a church. The church building was completed in 1883. This church was named after its location, Sweet Gum Level and later changed to Sweet Gum Grove. The original church was destroyed by fire in 1891. An old, no longer used church was given to Sweet Gum congregation by members of the white race as a means for members to continue the Sweet Gum Grove Church’s legacy. During the years, our forefathers and mothers have made many changes and renovations and with God’s blessings, we have our great church today:

Our church has a proud heritage. We are recognized throughout North Carolina and other states. We have members who are living all across the world. We have members in all kinds of professions. No matter where our members go, they return to their home church with fond memories, great deeds and many expressions of love. Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church has continued to glorify our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Today, we honor our ministers who sowed the seeds, which have harvested many souls to Christ. The following ministers have served as pastors in order of their names:

     Reverend Dave Evans
     Reverend W.H. Stanfield
     Reverend Floyd Long
     Reverend Spence Warren
     Reverend West Wiley
     Reverend William Warner
     Reverend Walter E. Mills
     Reverend Ernest C. McLaughlin
     Reverend Clarence Hairston, Jr.
     Reverend Gary T. Johnson
Reverend Clarence Hairston, Jr. (Served 2 separate terms)
Reverend Dr. Daniel Webb (Sept. 2005 - Our 11th Pastor)

During the past 137 years, God has truly blessed its members from the beginning through the vision of our founders. Today, He continues to bless our body of believers. Many new members have joined us through the years.  We give thanks to God for our Pastor, Reverend Doctor Daniel Webb and First Lady Tammy T. Webb.  Through their vision, we have had a very productive year in keeping with our theme of “The Place Where God Gets the Glory and the People Are His Story”. We honor our founders, our fathers, mothers, grand and great grand parents, relatives and friends who have devoted their time and energies for us to have a place to worship, a place to learn God’s Word, a place to rejoice and praise our Almighty Father and Savior. We are thankful for our history. It is our prayer that our church will forever stand as a living monument of God Almighty and our Savior Jesus Christ.
